Reaserch : Architecture style

Architecture style

I chose this project because nowadays many people work, study and forgot about their mental health, and how important it is. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), mental health is “a state of well-being in which the individual realizes his or her own abilities, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to his or her community”. our mental health can be affected by many things and of those things is the physical environment.

For the project, I will study the work of Odile Decq, Odile Decq is a French architect and urban planner. International renown came in 1990 with her first major commission: La Banque Populaire de l'Ouest in Rennes, France. French architecture has a strong connection to Algeria. Of all the architecture in Algerian cities the NEO-Moorish style, developed during French colonisation, stood out. Buildings in this style decorated the Algerian cities, giving them a diversity and an artistic richness.

I also find the work of Andrew Skurman, Skurman inspirational. His expertise lies in the elegant and refined expression of classical architecture and the interpretation of French, Georgian, and Mediterranean styles.  Andrew Skurman built his practice on creating genuinely contemporary classical homes for his clients. Andrew obtained his Bachelor of Architecture from Cooper Union in New York City in 1976. Since 1976, he has worked in many positions, he worked as a senior associate and a studio director before establishing his own company in 1992. One of Andrew s numerous achievements, he was named a Chevalier of Arts & Letters by the Minister of Culture of France.

since the project site is located in Algeria, I wanted it to have some Algerian features too

Algerian architecture style:

Colonial era:

The early French administration sought to radically transform the existing urban structures of Algerian cities to better allow for the logistics of military occupation and culturally mirror those of France.

Royal Numidian era:

Under the ancient Berber kingdoms of Numidia, Algeria saw increased urban development. "Numidian Royal Architecture" is the surname given for the monuments constructed by the Numidian kings, which comprise tombs, tumuli and sanctuaries. Evidence of urban planning during the kingdom of Mauretania has been found in Morocco and Tunisia.(www.wikiwand.com)

                                                            The Mausoleum at Dougga

The roman era:

The Romans built more than 500 towns and cities in what is now Algeria. When developing plans for their new cities.

                                                                       Al kantara-biskra

The Islamic era (Moorish architecture):

Islam brought many features of the Muslim cities to Algeria, including the souq as a commercial center, hammam as a social center, and the mosque and accompanying madrasah as a religious center.

The Ottoman era:

Under Ottoman rule, a hybrid style developed influenced by traditional Turkish styles,  The effect of Ottoman architecture was limited to the Algerian coast and, in particular, the regional capital of Algiers.
